MT VERNON CHURCH HISTORY

Our church was organized in Stanaford City, WV in 1905, under Pastor Frank Smith, with approximately 70 original members.

On Sunday, January 21, 1968, Pastor F.L. Hosea and the members stood over the ashes of Mount Vernon Church, which inexplicably burnt down the night before. Worship service was held at the community center on that day and for the next 11 months. Groundbreaking for the new building was held on September 15 of the same year, and the first service was conducted on January 5, 1969. Within 3 1/2 years the new mortgage was paid off.

In the mid 1980's a young man named Kenneth Eugene Freeman (pictured right) joined the church, who would go on to become the single most substantial contributor in the history of Mount Vernon. Serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board for nearly 30 years, "Deac," a brickmason by trade, built several additions onto the church, along with numerous improvements to the building and surrounding property. The church was without a pastor for five years from 1997-2002, During which time Deacon Freeman ensured that the church doors were opened as scheduled and worship was uninterrupted.

Donald D. Cook held the title of pastor from 2002-2014, and upon his retirement, Brian "Kiko" Wallington and Damon Hamby were elected by the church to serve as co-pastors.
